The Barkley Sound is located on western Vancouver Island. There are six major watersheds associated with the Barkley Sound – Somass, Sarita, Nahmint, Effingham, Toquaht and Henderson. The area is within the hahoulthee of the Nuu-chah-nulth people. Huu-ay-aht, Tseshaht, Hupacasath, Toquaht, Uchucklesaht, and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ First Nations live within the region. Port Alberni, Uclulet and Bamfield are located at various points within the Barkley Sound. This region falls under the jurisdiction of the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District.
Commercial fishing in the region includes seine, gillnet, and First Nations fisheries. Port Alberni has been designated one of Canada’s Ultimate Fishing Towns due to the great sports and recreational fishing opportunities.
There are two large scale hatcheries in the area – Robertson Creek Hatchery and Nitinat Hatchery. Small scale hatcheries include Thornton Creek, Alberni Valley Enhancement Association and Shannon Hatchery.
